Honeymoon: Iceland and Paris

I'm writing to keep track of my planning, to work some things out in my head and to clear my head. (Right now I'm knee deep in planning my vacation after the wedding.)

The end decision: Paris with a stop over in Iceland.

As the weather gets colder, I feel the need to bake. Warm things that make the kitchen smell great. But today I'm lazy and don't feel like dealing with anything from scratch. So how do you make instant dessert mix taste better?

How to make a canned pumpkin pie puree taste homemade:
-Measure 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon into a small bowl or cup
-Add 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger
-Add 1/8 teaspoon of ground allspice or ground cloves.
-Add 1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg.

Stir to blend into puree before you pop it in the oven.

Operation Bedroom Makeover

Since Giovanni is an architect and myself being really into design, we wanted to give our bed room some personality. It's amazing how different a room can look with painted walls and new curtains. The blue seafoam color makes everything so much brighter and bigger than the old off white walls. Surprisingly it looks good with our vintage furniture. The room will be accented with pillows and throw rugs from cb2.

You would think it would be difficult to makeover a room without compromising on the opposing person's taste but I think we did a good job merging the two - Nothing is too girly. Pictures to come when my life calms down.

This week I made 20,000 gallons of soup and did a lot of wedding planning. Next week we are meeting with the priest who will marry us. Planning a big party is a full time job, but it's fun.
This weekend we are going to start or at least buy paint for the bedroom and tomorrow is my little cousin's party for his first birthday. I bought him a sweater with little skull and cross bones on it. I have no desire to go out. I'm going to lock myself in my apartment with no food until the bedroom is painted and the party planning is done.

5. Eat crepes and drink wine with a friend

My company has been dressing up the kate spade store for quite awhile with vinyl stripes. I think it looks awesome. I'm planning on ordering some pre-cut vinyl near Christmas and seeing if I can spruce up a wall in the living room. The walls are cream color so I would order the same baby blue as below. Best part about it is if it looks terrible I can take it down without ruining the paint because the vinyl is a low tac adhesive. Can't wait to play

If you went to Fashion's Night out this year you should have walked the highline to West Chelsea and took a look around. It was the opening night for Submerged at Doosan Gallery - an art space that represents and supports Korean artists. The dancer was incredible. The performance started outside the gallery. In the beginning, the dancer stood limp. The gallery asked us to guide the dancer towards the entrance with light pushes and turns. The more she was touched the more energy we "gave her" until she began a free form dance where she moved to the rhythm of the sounds and projected light.

I have a room in my apartment that needs help, and painting might be the best way to fix it. I am trying to find a color that works with the rest of the room, as is. The current color palette in the room is very stark: white, slate-grey and espresso with a red antique wing back chair. The walls are a boring cream color. 1930's Fashion

I first visited Rosebud Vintage to just take a look before I ran some errands. The name Rosebud Vintage is deceiving, as all the clothes there are really antiques (which makes me love the store even more) Even my granny didn't have clothes in her closet this old. Most of the dresses are from the 1950's dating back to the Victorian Era. At first I was searching for a 1920's frock, because who doesn't want an authentic flapper dress if they can get their hands on one?

However I never really realized how absolutely stunning 1930's clothes really are. I think we all associate the 1930's with the Great Depression and over look how beautiful the fashion was. The fashion of the roaring twenties was fit loosely and tomboyish however the 30's brought more form fitting, elegant and feminine wear. Most of the evening wear was long and covered most of the skin but were completely backless. I thought about purchasing one, but where would I wear one to? If I was a movie star I would wear them to red carpet events.

New Orleans

Almost two months ago, Giovanni and I got on a plane and went to New Orleans for the weekend.

We went on this awesome bike tour through Marigny and the Upper 9th ward, stopping at the levy, and local bars on the way to try Abita Beer while getting bad sunburns on our faces. My favorite part of the trip was eating (gumbo, fried alligator, po' boys, and "holy trinity sauce" HEAVEN) and discovering Jason Ricci at a Jazz club on Frenchman street, a blues musician who rocks out on the harmonica (I bought both his cds)

I learned a little bit of history from this trip. Apparently New Orleans was built by ex-cons and the unruly sons of aristocratic families. Even in the 17th century, nobody else wanted to go there because the area was prone to severe flooding.

Besides eating, we (mostly Gino)took a lot of pictures of all the old houses. I think when you go to New Orleans you are supposed to drink hurricanes and hang out on Bourbon Street. We are going to save that for next time.;)

Apple Pie

My recipe for apple pie: Cut apples into tinnny pieces, throw in a few hundred sticks of butter, an illegal amount of sugar and stick it in the oven. I got a little carried way apple picking last fall. I may or may not have returned home with about 50 apples. So anyway, I spent my entire Sunday baking pies and gained about 10 pounds in a week. I love pie, but maybe next time I'll be nice and share!

Art Exhibit: The Architecture of Devotion at the Gowanus Ballroom

Have you ever gone to the Gowanus Ballroom? It's this amazing warehouse on the Gowanus Canal. It's a welding studio that is turned into a exhibition space every few months. The first time I stepped foot in the building I was overtaken by how beautiful it was.

On Fashion's Night out Sherry and I ran to the Mcqueen boutique and marveled at the craftsmanship of all the clothing. Oh, and the texture. We looved the texture. Then, Sherry couldn't take it anymore and bought a skull clutch. Let me point out we were looking at the ready made clothes. What is going to happen when we see get together to see the couture clothing?

my alphabet

I drew the alphabet for a number of reasons. Mainly because I wanted to create a work of art that did not symbolize anything other than what it represented. An "A" stands for the letter "A" and that's about it. If I drew a dog, well a dog can represent so much that some might look beyond the purpose of my art which is simply about the craftsmanship of each letter.

I also decided to draw the alphabet because I wanted to make art that went beyond just a picture on the wall. I plan to print these onto totes, dishware and onto fabric to give out as gifts. This art is something that you can interact with in everyday life.

I worked at a catering hall for 4 years in college. So when I got engaged I decided that a typical wedding might possibly take me back to being 20 years old wearing a tuxedo serving salads to drunkards. (not that there is anything wrong with that) It just means I want to do things a little differently. Even though I'm enjoying a long engagement and not getting married anytime soon I'm having fun thinking about decorating. It's like a big art project for me. So I'm making style boards of things friends send to me, and things I discover on my own so when it's time to make some big decisions, I have some visuals I can refer back to.

So here is the first one without a color scheme in mind.

I know that artists are critical of their own work but something that I need to start getting better at is how to deal with difficult lighting when taking pictures.
